Through Her Eyes
The ‘Through Her Eyes’ initiative is an idealised film festival which aims to convey the data of the on and off screen representation of women in the film industry.
The ultimate aim is for people to understand that the representation of women through cinema is extremely lacking and unchanging.
This data design package consists of an invitation to an independent film festival, called ‘Through Her Eyes’, with a complementary popcorn box which also holds integral data. The invitation not only invites viewers to the festival but also provides an interactive experience which unveils insights is into the film industry as well as investigates the representation of the specific film they have been invited to see and it’s respective release year.
The 3D glasses which are provided with the invitation displays the 10 year average of women and mens on-screen appearance by the use of the blue and red lens. From 2008-2018, women’s prevalence on-screen averages at 30.875%. This means mens on-screen average at 69.125%. When reading the stereo-anaglyphic aspects (3D text) of this invite, people are able to understand the effect of having uneven lens and in turn, the unfair representation between men and women.
For this invitation in particular, the film 'Star Wars Episode VII: the force awakens' was chosen and this is reflected through the specific data visualised. Looking at the top 5 speaking roles in this film, only one was a female character who was also the protagonist of the film - named Rey. Between these 5 characters, 5256 words were spoken and of these words 1363 words were spoken by Rey. This equates to 25.93% [rounded to 26%) of words spoken.  The red on on the exterior of the box (the net on the right) displays this percentage distribution. The exterior (the net on the left) conveys speaking roles on general across male and female characters, men speaking 72% of the words and women speaking 28%. An equal share in dialogue should ideally be 50% of dialogue spoken by both sexes. A light blue colour is used to displayed words spoken by a man, but the percentage that could’ve been spoken by a female to contribute to an equal share in the dialogue. Popcorn is deducted from a serving depending on the percentage that doesn’t allow for equal dialogue across genders.
